Bicycle Corporation guest DJ Brendon P for Roots 179

Bicycle Corporation presents Roots 179 with guest DJ Brendon P on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across Asia and internationally.

Bicycle Corporation is the Italian duo of DJ and producer Marco Mei and multi-instrumentalist Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884. Together, they have developed a catalogue of more than fifty original productions and remixes across Deep House, Tech House, French House, Techno and related electronic styles.

Marco began his career in Turin during the early 1990s and became closely involved with the Urban People collective. His work around events, club nights and DJing helped establish his place within Italy’s developing underground House and Techno scene.

As his reputation grew, Marco began receiving bookings beyond his home city and later across Italy before expanding internationally. A residency at Pacha in Sharm el-Sheikh became an important stage in that development, followed by performances across Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Stefano grew up in Turin with a strong musical background shaped by classical piano, percussion and drums. His influences ranged from composers such as Chopin to the rhythmic structures of West African djembe, giving him a broad foundation before electronic music became a central part of his work.

During his teenage years, Stefano became increasingly interested in DJ culture and the electronic sounds that were rarely heard on mainstream Italian radio at the time. That interest gradually developed into production, allowing him to combine traditional musicianship with the possibilities offered by electronic music.

When Marco and Stefano began working together, Bicycle Corporation emerged from their complementary backgrounds in DJing, performance and production. Their releases have appeared through labels including Alchemy, Miniatures, WL77, Suka and GrooveTraxx, connecting the project with a wide range of underground House and Techno scenes.

The duo have also revisited earlier material through their Bandcamp page, giving older productions a renewed place alongside their later work. That connection with their earlier catalogue reflects the same interest in musical roots that sits behind the concept of the Roots series.

Roots gives Bicycle Corporation space to explore the artists, records and musical influences connected with their wider electronic music background. The programme also regularly features guest DJs and producers whose selections complement the duo’s interest in deeper and more established strands of underground club music.

Guest DJ Brendon P.

This edition’s guest DJ is Brendon P, real name Brendon Perera, a Singaporean DJ and producer with more than four decades of experience behind the decks. His career began in 1980 on Singapore’s mobile DJ circuit before he moved into club performances the following year.

A visit to New York in 1984 became an important point in his musical development, exposing him directly to clubs including the Funhouse, Paradise Garage, Danceteria and Area. Experiencing New York club culture during this period strengthened his interest in the sounds that were developing around Disco, Garage and the emerging foundations of House music.

Over the following decades, Brendon developed a broad musical collection through extensive DJ work in Singapore and internationally. House, Techno, Disco, Nu Disco, Funk, Soul, Lounge and Electronica all feature within his selections, giving him considerable scope to adapt his sets without being restricted to one genre.

His early club work included appearances connected with the Juliana’s and Bacchus groups before residencies at Neo Pharaohs, Venom and NOX during the 1990s. He later spent nine years as a resident at Singapore’s Zouk Club, adding another significant chapter to his long involvement with the country’s nightlife.

Further residencies included Kyo and the rooftop venue CÉ LA VI at Marina Bay Sands. These positions kept Brendon closely connected with Singapore’s club scene while his international appearances continued to extend his work beyond the country.

His DJ career has taken him to cities including Geneva, Gothenburg, Melbourne, London, New York, Miami, Taipei, Hanoi and Hong Kong. In June 2010, he also performed at New York’s Cielo, adding one of the city’s recognised underground clubs to his international history.

Alongside DJing, Brendon has developed a substantial catalogue as a producer, with original productions and remixes appearing through labels including In The Woods, Los Grandes, Reversoulmusic, Audio Parallax, Hotbox Music, Soul Shift and Defected. Further releases through Rawjak, Eclesia, Issys Groove, Love International and One With Music connect his studio work with labels from Singapore and the wider international House Artists scene.

Brendon’s mixes reflect the same broad musical background, often connecting material from different periods rather than concentrating only on current releases. His approach places detailed selection and continuity at the centre of the set, allowing House Songs and Disco to sit alongside Funk, Soul, Techno and more leftfield electronic music.

His appearance on Bicycle Corporation’s Roots 179 is particularly suited to a series built around experienced selectors and the musical influences behind contemporary electronic music. Brendon P brings more than four decades of club culture, record collecting and international DJ experience to the guest session, connecting early Disco and House foundations with later underground electronic music.

DJ Brendon P opens Roots Episode 179 with KON's Fly Away Edit of Cloud One's Atmosphere Strut, immediately establishing the Disco foundation that becomes increasingly important as the session develops. Session Victim's MPFree Now shifts into Deep House, before KON's rework of Kamasi Washington introduces Nu Jazz and his edit of Ebony Steel Band adds an Afrobeat influence.

Disclosure and Fatoumata Diawara bring the mix into House Music with Ultimatum, while Captain Planet's remix of Nickodemus and Sammy Ayala introduces a Latin rhythmic turn. Aroop Roy maintains the house groove with Pimp, before Sunlightsquare's I Believe In Miracles returns to Nu Jazz with a broken-beat character.

Ben Banjo-Field's A Magic Land begins a stronger Nu Disco passage before DJ Tennis reshapes Orofino's Amsterdam and Jamie 3:26 with Danou P return to deeper house territory on Love Not. Cinthie's extended remix of Turntable Orchestra's You're Gonna Miss Me then reconnects the session with a direct house pulse before the programme turns decisively towards classic disco material.

Michael Gray's versions of MFSB's Love Is The Message and Fat Larry's Band's Looking For Love lead an extended run of disco-rooted selections, followed by Faze Action's instrumental Fantasy and Marc Roberts' edit of Gene Chandler. The Mousse T. mashup combining Teddy Pendergrass with The Vision and Andreya Triana continues that sequence, while Dave Mathmos' remix of Aquarian Dream keeps the late stages firmly anchored in soulful dancefloor music.

Dr Packer's Jazz Funk Homage Mix of Freeez's Southern Freeez broadens the closing section through Soul, Funk and Disco influences before 10th Street and Tom Noble bring another straight disco selection with E.A.R.L.'S Theme Version. Love Drops 03 - Side B completes the episode with one final disco cut, rounding off a second half shaped strongly by edits, reworks and contemporary interpretations of older dance music.

Across Roots Episode 179, Brendon P connects Disco and Nu Disco with Deep House, House, Nu Jazz, Afrobeat, Latin rhythms and Funk without losing the warm musical identity of the programme. The episode develops from a varied opening into an increasingly disco-focused final stretch, with KON, Michael Gray, Dr Packer and other editors helping bridge classic material with contemporary club production.
