Electronic Roots 3 @ Barcade Taiwan

Event Details

This event took place at Barcade Taiwan, B1, No. 177, Section 1, Heping East Road, Da’an District, Taipei City 106, Taiwan, from 10 PM on 16 June 2023 until 3 AM on 17 June 2023. Scientific Sound Asia and Barcade Taiwan presented Electronic Roots 3, continuing the club series that grew from the success of the Bicycle Corporation online radio show.

The third edition featured Electronic Roots founder Marco Mei for a free-entry night in Taipei. The event kept the concept centred on electronic music while giving Marco the space to draw from the wide range of styles that had shaped his career.

Marco Mei is an Italian DJ with more than three decades of international experience behind the decks. Shaped by the early waves of Afro and House music, he began his DJ career in 1991 and developed a style that later moved through House, Deep House, Disco House, Nu Disco, Tech House and related underground sounds.

His long career gave Electronic Roots 3 a strong link with several generations of club culture. Rather than approaching electronic music from a single contemporary trend, Marco could draw on decades of experience across House and underground dance music.

That history also gave the event a natural connection with House Music. Afrocentric rhythms, deeper grooves and club-focused selections had been part of Marco’s musical background since the early stages of his career.

International touring became a major part of his work as his profile developed. His appearances included Woo Bar in Bali, The Mansion in Shanghai, Fuse in Brussels, The Observatory in Ho Chi Minh City, Vervo Club in Kunming, Pacha in Dresden, Cha Cha Moon in Koh Samui, NLO in Minsk, Time in Manila and Global Dance in Russia.

Those bookings placed Marco across very different club environments in Europe and Asia. Moving between large venues, intimate underground rooms and international events gave him experience adapting his selections to different audiences without losing the groove-led approach behind his sets.

Marco also shared line-ups during his career with artists including Roger Sanchez, David Morales, Ralph Falcon, Sander Kleinenberg, Harry “Choo Choo” Romero, Justin Berkmann and Funk D’Void. Those connections placed his DJ history alongside several established figures from House and underground electronic music.

His work with Bicycle Corporation added another important part of the story behind Electronic Roots. Alongside producer Stefano Ugliano, also known as 6884, Marco developed a long-running relationship with Scientific Sound Asia Radio through broadcasts covering different areas of electronic music.

The Electronic Roots radio programme provided the foundation for the physical Taipei events. Moving the concept into Barcade Taiwan allowed Marco to take music previously presented through an online broadcast and shape it directly around a local dancefloor.

The third edition differed from the previous Barcade events by placing Marco Mei alone at the centre of the published programme. That gave the night a more focused structure and allowed his broader musical history to guide the full direction of the event.

Barcade Taiwan again provided a deliberately informal setting for the series. Rather than operating as a conventional nightclub, the venue combined electronic music with games, food and drinks, creating a social environment where guests could move freely between the dancefloor and other parts of the room.

The venue’s American comfort food was accompanied by craft beer, craft cocktails, infused moonshine shots and adult boozy gummy bears. Arcade games, pool, foosball and darts added to the atmosphere and helped give Barcade its distinctive identity within Taipei nightlife.

That combination suited Electronic Roots because the concept was broad enough to work outside a rigid club setting. Guests could arrive specifically for Marco Mei or simply become part of the night while spending time around the games, bar and dancefloor.

Entry was free, keeping the event accessible and continuing the relaxed approach of the earlier Barcade editions. The focus remained on music, atmosphere and participation rather than an expensive ticketed headline format.

Guests were asked not to bring outside food or drinks out of respect for the venue. The event information also included a reminder not to drink and drive, keeping the party atmosphere connected with a straightforward safety message.

The third edition also continued Scientific Sound Asia’s wider relationship with Taipei’s underground electronic music community. What had begun as an online radio programme could now operate as a recurring physical event while remaining connected with listeners elsewhere in Asia and internationally.

Scientific Sound Asia’s current platform links this history through its events, radio programming, DJ agency and music news. The Barcade editions form part of that development by showing how Bicycle Corporation’s broadcasts moved naturally into live events in Taiwan.

Electronic Roots 3 therefore continued the series with a simpler line-up but the same broad electronic philosophy. Marco Mei brought more than three decades of international DJ experience to Barcade Taiwan for a free-entry night built around House, groove and the underground influences that had shaped his career.
