The Fridge - Soft Opening

Event Details

This event took place at Piu Piu, QPG3+WM3, 97 Hai Bà Trưng, Sài Gòn, Ho Chi Minh City 71000, from 10 PM on 30 July 2016 until 4 AM on 31 July 2016. The venue has since closed, but the original location has been kept for archive accuracy.

Piu Piu and Scientific Sound presented the soft opening of The Fridge, the venue’s second-floor bass room. The event was recorded live for Fantasy FM, London’s original pirate radio station.

The Fridge was built as Piu Piu’s dedicated bass room, with soundproofed wooden walls designed for Bass, Deep and Techno music. The concept was direct and stripped back, with one bar, one DJ booth and one dance floor.

The original event listing made the room’s purpose clear with no tables and no chairs. The focus was on sound, movement and a dance floor built for low-end pressure.

Fantasy FM started broadcasting from North London in August 1989 on 98.6 FM. The station played Acid House, Rave and Hardcore during a period when those sounds were shaping UK underground club culture and crossing into the mainstream charts.

The station featured DJs including DJ Hype, DJ Krome, DJ Rap, Spice, Tek and The Mystery Man. Its presenters had different styles, from live mixing with minimal speech to request-led shows with shout-outs coming in through pagers.

Fantasy FM also hosted rave nights at the Astoria nightclub in Charing Cross, London. DJs connected with those events included Fabio & Grooverider, Colin Faver, Randall and members of the Fantasy FM roster.

The soft opening featured a back-to-back set from DJ Psycho-UK and DJ Tristyan Lebrun, transmitted back to the UK from 10 PM to midnight Vietnam time. The night connected London pirate radio culture with a new bass-focused room in Ho Chi Minh City.
