Yushka releases mesmerising playlist for upcoming Funk 3 show

Yushka presented Funk Show episode 3 for Scientific Sound Asia, originally aired on 24 May 2019. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform, connecting audiences across the region and internationally.

Originally from Nottingham in the United Kingdom, Yushka was a principal organiser of the city’s Sh!ts and Giggles and Hot-Point sound systems, and later belonged to the What The Funk? DJ collective. From the mid-2000s, he played free parties, raves, festivals and club nights across the United Kingdom, Ireland and Vietnam.

His interest in production and mixing began during his teenage years, when access to DJ equipment was limited. He initially made mixes using basic software and a CD recorder, sharing them with classmates before acquiring decks.

In 2004, Yushka began learning on decks at the age of 22 and developed his practical approach to DJing. By 2006, he was co-hosting weekly Sh!ts and Giggles events in Nottingham with founder Animinimal, also known as Deck-starter and Catalyst.

Those events took place in bars and clubs around the city, where the available systems did not always meet the needs of the music being played. Sh!ts and Giggles therefore established its own sound system, giving the organisers greater control over the presentation of their parties.

Nottingham’s Hotpoint Sound System followed after a lengthy listening session with Matty C of Hanoi Hi-Fi. The two systems became involved in independent gatherings and multi-genre events across the East Midlands.

Promoters including Substance D&B, Pure Filth, TSA303, Monkey Nuts and Psycle collaborated with Hotpoint and Sh!ts and Giggles on these events. The partnerships placed Yushka within a local network that brought different styles and audiences together.

In Vietnam, Yushka played at Sidewalk Hanoi and supported EZ Rollers and Kenny Ken at venues including Broma: Not a Bar, Arcan and Bann Bar in Ho Chi Minh City. At the time of this episode, he was also a resident at Sunday Funk Sessions at Arcan, while his profile was listed through the Scientific Sound Asia DJ agency.

DJ Yushka presents Funk Show 3 on Scientific Sound Asia, with a selection moving through Funk, Disco, Breaks, Ghetto Funk, Soul, Electro and Hip Hop. The episode features music from Edwin Starr, Boney M, Olympic Runners, Banbarra, Chic, Herman Kelly, Jimmy Bo Horne, Hamilton Bohannon, Featurecast, Father Funk, A.Skillz, Nick Thayer and Bugz In The Attic.

Edwin Starr opens with War, placing the episode inside Soul before Boney M and Traks move the selection towards Disco. Olympic Runners and Banbarra then bring the programme into Funk with Bitch and Shack Up Pt. 1.

Chic’s Good Times keeps the disco thread in place, followed by Herman Kelly’s drum-heavy funk classic Dance To The Drummer's Beat. Jimmy Bo Horne and Frantique then extend the early dancefloor section through Spank and Strut Your Funky Stuff.

Freestyle’s Don’t Stop The Rock introduces an Electro entry before Hamilton Bohannon returns the tracklist to Funk with The Groove Machine. Daryl Hall, John Oates and Chromeo then add Tenderoni, linking the programme to a modern funk and pop crossover.

Dimaa’s Back In The Day opens the Ghetto Funk and edit-based section, followed by 3balitz, 5 In Love with Cab Canaveral, and 11 Acorn Lane. Jenova Collective, Bart & Baker, Tavo, Kitten On The Keys and the Swing Brothers then keep the middle passage close to swing-influenced party edits and vintage sample culture.

Featurecast’s Funky White Brother moves the show into Breaks before Sam & Dave appear through DJ Twister’s edit of Soul Man. Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Father Funk, X-Ray Ted and Funk Ferret then take the programme through Funk, Ghetto Funk and modern edit material.

Uncle Louie’s Full Tilt Boogie appears in the Slynk and Stickybuds remix, followed by El Bomba and Hidden Riddim with Dr Fluteski. US3’s Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) then introduces Jazz Music, connecting the tracklist to jazz-rap and sample-led Hip Hop.

All Good Funk Alliance and BadboE move the second half through Breaks with Slingshot Boogie and Dynamite in remix form. Cris Crucial then adds Hip Hop with West Coast Don, before Featurecast returns with Rock Ya Body.

A.Skillz and Nick Thayer’s Drop The Funk keeps the closing section in Breaks, followed by All Good Funk Alliance with Super Jam. Jayl Funk, Slynk, Featurecast, Funk Burners and Boca 45 then build the final run across Breaks, Funk and Ghetto Funk.

Bugz In The Attic close Funk Show 3 with Move Aside, bringing the episode into broken beat and UK club territory. The result is a funk-centred archive mix that connects original disco and soul records with later breaks, edits and bass-led party material.
