Yushka presented the second episode of Yushka’s Funk Show on Scientific Sound Asia, originally aired on Friday 17 May 2019. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music news platform, connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.
Originally from Nottingham in the United Kingdom, Yushka had been DJing at free parties, raves, festivals and club nights in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Vietnam since the mid-2000s. His background covered multi-genre events alongside Funk, Soul, Breaks, Hip Hop, Electro, Techno and Drum and Bass selections cited in the original profile.
Yushka was a former member of Nottingham’s What The Funk? DJ collective, and he founded the Sh!ts and Giggles and Hot-Point sound systems. Those projects formed part of his local activity before his work extended to Vietnam.
His interest in DJing began with an early fascination for music production and recorded mixes, although he initially lacked access to turntables. Using basic software and a CDR, he made mixes to share with school friends before gaining experience on professional equipment.
In 2004, at the age of 22, Yushka first had the opportunity to practise with turntables. By 2006, he and co-host Animinimal, also known through Deck-starter and Catalyst, were hosting weekly Sh!ts and Giggles events in Nottingham bars and clubs.
The scale of those events led the pair to supplement venue systems with their own equipment, establishing the Sh!ts and Giggles sound system. This gave the project a practical foundation for the varied parties for which it became known.
After a late-night music session with Matty C of Hanoi Hi-Fi, Yushka helped establish Nottingham’s Hotpoint Sound System. The resulting parties were associated with the free-party culture surrounding the project.
His East Midlands collaborations included Substance D&B, Pure Filth, TSA303, Monkey Nuts and Psycle, while he had also supported EZ Rollers and Kenny Ken. In Vietnam, the original profile recorded appearances at Sidewalk Hanoi, Broma: Not a Bar, Arcan and Bann Bar, and listed him as a resident at Arcan’s Sunday Funk Sessions in Ho Chi Minh City during 2019.
DJ Yushka presents Funk Show 2 on Scientific Sound Asia, with a selection moving through Funk, Soul, Breaks, Hip Hop, Disco, Rare Groove and Reggae. The episode features music from RJD2, Stevie Wonder, The Brothers Johnson, James Brown, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Commodores, Breakestra, Tower Of Power, Marvin Gaye, A.Skillz, Krafty Kuts and Kool Hertz.
The show opens with RJD2’s Fuckajob, linking the start of the episode to Hip Hop production and sample-based rhythm. Stevie Wonder then brings in Superstition, followed by The Brothers Johnson with Get The Funk Out Ma Face.
Freedom’s Get Up And Dance introduces Disco before African Music Machine and James Brown return the programme to Funk. Olympic Runners, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Commodores and Rose Royce then build the first major groove-led section of the show.
All The People featuring Robert Moore continue the funk direction with Cramp Your Style, followed by Breakestra and Tower Of Power. Johnny Jones And The King Casuals then add Purple Haze, bringing a rock-linked funk interpretation into the tracklist.
Betty Wright’s Where Is The Love moves the selection into Soul before Ellen McIlwaine’s Higher Ground adds a rock and funk crossover. ESG return the set to Funk with Get Funky, followed by Janis Joplin’s Move Over and the Just Brothers with Sliced Tomatoes.
Kinny and Diesler bring Back Street Lust, followed by Ann Robinson’s You Did It and Louis Armstrong’s Mack The Knife in the ProleteR Tribute. Andy Cooper then links with The Allergies remix of Chasing The Funk, moving the middle section back towards Hip Hop and party breaks.
Erick Sermon and Marvin Gaye’s Music keeps the Hip Hop thread in place before El Bomba introduces Party Your Ass Off. BadboE, Black Machine and Adfunk then move the programme through Ghetto Funk, Hip Hop and B-boy break material.
A.Skillz and Krafty Kuts bring Now Drop, followed by Rueben Bell’s Superjock in the Stickybuds edit. Bobby McFerrin’s Don't Worry Be Happy then appears in the Father Funk remix, keeping the episode in party edit territory.
Breakerz Allstarz, Defkline with Red Polo, and DJ Twister move the later section through Breaks and Reggae-linked refix material. Jimi Needles with WBBL then add Crash The Party, followed by Chudy’s Say It in the 2012 refix.
Tom Drummond’s Tasty keeps the closing section focused on Breaks before All Good Funk Alliance return with Super Jam. Jayl Funk, All Good Funk Alliance with Rubber Johnson, and Kool Hertz close Funk Show 2 across breaks, funk edits and dancefloor rhythm.
