Jstar releases tracklist for Control Tower 7

Jstar presented Control Tower 7 for Scientific Sound Asia in October 2018. Scientific Sound Asia is an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music-news platform connecting audiences across Asia and internationally.

The original post introduced the edition alongside a Berlin fundraising event and its accompanying tracklist. It documented Jstar’s work as a London-based DJ, remixer and producer with a profile in Reggae and Dub circles.

At the time, Jstar had spent more than 15 years developing his work across DJing, remixing and production. The source noted recognition from David Rodigan, Norman Jay and Grandmaster Flash.

His albums Stand To Order and Dub To Order formed part of the background to this edition. The original article also credited his production work with supporting Reggae artists in China, India and New Zealand.

Before this post was published, Jstar had completed an extensive tour of China. That period was presented as further evidence of his activity as both a DJ and producer.

The Berlin event took place on the Friday following publication and raised funds for Refugee Community Kitchen. Channel One Sound System appeared at YAAM Berlin, with Lion's Den providing the sound system.

Natty Campbell MC joined Jstar for a roots-style supporting performance, according to the original announcement. The wider programme also listed bass, Jungle and Techno rooms from Spiral Tribe.

Jstar presents Control Tower 7 on Scientific Sound Asia, with a Jstar-heavy archive selection rooted in Dub, Reggae, Dancehall, Bass Music and Hip Hop. The episode features music from Dreadsquad, The Black Seeds, Dirty Dubsters, Tippa Irie, Mr. Benn, Poirier, Macka B, Katy B, Cut La Vis, Mr Vegas and Mr Williamz.

Control Tower is Jstar’s programme for reggae, dub, dancehall, bass music and sound system culture. This edition places his own productions and remixes close to vocal reggae, dancehall cuts, dubwise edits and UK bass-led material.

Freaky Beans open with Pearly King Skank, before Jstar moves into dub territory with Shimmy The Light and (Still) Passin' Me By. Dreadsquad and Natalie Storm follow with Beat That Chest in the Jstar remix, bringing the early section into Dancehall.

The Black Seeds and MC Ishu’s Come To Me appears in another Jstar remix, followed by Knights Of The Dub Table and Yes King. Dirty Dubsters and Mr Williams then add Special Request in the Jstar remix, keeping the sequence close to dub, reggae and dancehall production.

Mahala Rai Banda vs. Nas introduces a Hip Hop crossover through Balkan Nas, before DJ Maars returns the programme to reggae with Feelin' Irie. Dero and Farina Miss then add a Bass Music entry with Ten Feet Tall, followed by Pinchers on Yellow Belly Vaquero in Lord Lyta’s blend.

Jstar’s Music Time starts another dubwise run before Chainska Brassika and Tippa Irie appear with Just Love in the Jstar remix. Mr. Benn and Serocee follow with Rising Star, while Jstar’s Unstep My Dub keeps the centre of the episode focused on his dub production style.

Emptyheads’ Shake in the Jstar remix and Mr. Benn with Blackout JA on Trubble move the selection through bass-heavy remix material and Dancehall. Poirier and Marie Christine’s Imma Keep Yuh then extends the vocal club thread, before Open Souls’ Turn It Up! appears in the Sub Mariner mix.

Derek Lara and Trinity bring a reggae version of Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, followed by David Jahson’s Natty Chase The Barber. Ghost Writers then shift the rhythm towards Jungle with How We Roll, before Huzzman and I-Mitri return the set to reggae with Lift Up Your Head.

Macka B’s Legalise Herb appears in the Jinx In Dub refix, linking the late section back to dub and roots reggae concerns. Dusty Donuts then brings Hip Hop into the sequence with Remember Me, before Katy B’s Katy On A Mission in the Captain Planet remix returns to bass-led club material.

Cut La Vis’ Love My Music in the Numa Crew remix, Mr Vegas’ Old School Hustling and Mr Williamz’s Bad Boy Business keep the final section close to sound system vocabulary. Sam And The Womp’s Ice Cream Man in the Jstar remix, Jstar’s No Diggedy, Lionfire’s Truth & Rights and Daddy Vigo’s Musical Hero close Control Tower 7 across Bass Music, Dub and Reggae.
