Velvety Elements 334 welcomes back DJ Joshua for another edition of his long-running show on Scientific Sound Asia. Scientific Sound Asia operates as an Asian electronic music radio station, DJ agency, promoter and music news platform, connecting underground artists and listeners across the region and internationally.
Based in Évora, Portugal, DJ Joshua has been involved with electronic music since the 1990s, developing his outlook through vinyl, cassettes, CDs and later digital formats. His background spans a wide range of electronic music and provides the foundation for a career built across DJing, radio, event organisation and production.
That experience shapes the identity of Velvety Elements, where Joshua concentrates on the warmer, soulful and groove-led side of his collection. His programming favours smooth pacing, subtle rhythmic movement and measured transitions that allow individual tracks to develop naturally.
Joshua remained connected with Portugal's underground scene through event organisation, collaboration and support for local artists. After stepping away from regular musical activity to concentrate on family life, he later returned through Floating Beats and gradually rebuilt his presence in radio.
Velvety Elements developed during that renewed period of activity while giving the softer side of his musical identity a dedicated platform. The programme has since become a regular outlet for selections built around groove, melody, depth and continuity.
His studio work under the Joshua Marian name reflects much of that direction. Soul Zone and Love My Soul on Bassment Tapes, together with Tengo Rojo and Restless Lips on 659 Records, form part of a catalogue centred on warmer rhythms and melodic detail.
How to Play Guitar on JFLM Recordings takes a more melodic route, while Always on My Mind and I Can Go, You Can See on 14th Level Of Paradise continue the deeper side of the project. Joshua Marian gives him a distinct space for material closely connected with the character of Velvety Elements.
Joshua also records as K Joshua, using the alias for more hypnotic, spacious, dub-influenced and experimental ideas. Promised Work on Kopoc, Stranger Things on dublucid, As You Are on Liberty Rhythm and Slow Laziness on Ghetto Rhythms Records illustrate that more abstract side of his catalogue.
Working under different identities allows Joshua to separate contrasting studio ideas while retaining a clear purpose for each project. Joshua Marian carries much of the warmer and more melodic material, while K Joshua provides room for deeper and more experimental productions.
In 2024, Joshua launched JFLM Recordings as an independent outlet for his productions and collaborative work. The label gives him greater control over how new material is presented while providing a dedicated home for music connected with the different sides of his studio activity.
That production work feeds naturally back into his radio programmes and broadens the perspective behind each edition. Velvety Elements 334 continues the series with another carefully paced session shaped by Joshua's long-standing connection with groove, melody and deeper electronic music.
DJ Joshua opens Velvety Elements 334 with N.Y. House'n Authority's Window Guards in DJ Steaw's Autumn Reshape, immediately settling into the warm, understated pulse of Deep House. D'Julz follows with Weekend Warriors, while Joshua Marian's I Know keeps the opening section firmly rooted in patient grooves and low-slung club movement.
Sean Roman and Toronto Hustle continue that deeper direction through Nick Holder and Tyrone Solomon's Trackheadz remix of Social Narcotics, bringing a distinctly classic house sensibility into the sequence. ACME's Rhythm Of Life III then introduces the only Progressive House selection, briefly widening the melodic scope before the set returns to a straighter house framework.
Carlos Nilmmns and Keter Darker shift the focus towards House Music with Southside, followed by Ferrari's Crazy Love. Franck Roger's Won't Hurt then pulls the programme back into deeper territory, restoring the more restrained and groove-led character established during the opening run.
Prunk's The Penguin keeps the rhythm direct before The Mekanism adds the episode's sole Funky House selection with The Groove on Robsoul Recordings. That brighter rhythmic turn provides the clearest contrast in the latter half without disturbing the set's overall emphasis on warm, underground house.
Andre Butano and Chinonegro return the mix to Deep House with Chardonnay on 8Bit, bringing the closing stretch back to the deeper textures that dominate the programme. Greg Gow then finishes with Minister of Music on Poker Flat Recordings, rounding off the episode with a final deep and measured selection.
Across Velvety Elements 334, Deep House accounts for seven of the twelve tracks, supported by three House cuts and single selections of Progressive House and Funky House. DJ Joshua keeps the programme balanced between classic underground influences and contemporary club material, maintaining the smooth pacing and warm rhythmic character associated with Velvety Elements.
