Cooking With Gas episode 09 originally aired on Sunday, 21 June 2020. You can listen to the show using the Mixcloud player below the track list. Scientific Sound Asia is the English-language underground electronic music station for expats and locals across Vietnam, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and the wider Asian region.
Cooking With Gas is a weekly exploration of all things percussive, groovy and dark, curated by Ezmun. Episode 09 opens with Ezmun’s one-hour selection, moving fluidly from tech house into harder industrial-leaning techno. The second hour features a guest mix from Jonathan Thomlinson.
A photographer by profession, Jonny has always had a strong passion for dance music. While studying in Manchester, he became a regular at Soup Kitchen, The White Hotel and other standout parties in the city, eventually building his own vinyl collection. His mix for this episode is an energetic journey through some of his favourite techno records, from minimal to acid to industrial.
Outside of music, Jonny runs Then There Was Us, a photography magazine dedicated to showcasing and discussing contemporary photography, writing and journalism both online and in print — a platform well worth exploring.
Ezmun, originally from Cumbria in the United Kingdom, relocated to Vietnam to pursue his ambitions as a DJ and producer. Although the pandemic forced him to temporarily move to Melbourne, he continued to push his sound through his weekly radio show. Like many DJs, his journey began in the bedroom, eventually progressing to house parties with close friends before stepping into club environments.
By 2019, Ezmun had made significant progress in the underground scene, performing in Manchester, Hanoi, Laos and Ho Chi Minh City. Drawing inspiration from the dark, sparse energy of minimal halftime 140s and the percussive edge of leftfield bass, he blends these influences into dynamic techno sets marked by contrast and tension.
He continues to earn recognition within Vietnam’s underground community and aims to return in the future. In the meantime, he is exploring Melbourne’s nightlife and developing his production skills with plans to release original material.
Cooking With Gas serves as a platform for Ezmun to showcase friends, emerging talents and the genres he connects with most deeply, offering listeners a curated dive into his evolving musical world.
The episode opens with Ezmun moving confidently through a stripped and percussive space, beginning with rhythm-led selections that lean toward tech-house tension before quickly shifting into heavier structures. Tracks from Bakongo and Dani Sbert introduce sharper edges, setting the foundation for the harder industrial direction that defines the rest of the hour.
As the mix deepens, Ezmun leans into dense, driving techno built on raw textures and metallic pressure. The selection from Lucy and Rødhåd expands the hypnotic element, while Makaton, Inigo Kennedy and Psyk push toward more forceful energy. Industrial cuts from Death Abyss and Regis bring the set into its most intense phase, closing Ezmun’s hour with a deliberate, uncompromising tone.
Jonathan Thomlinson opens the second hour with a shift toward leftfield electronic influences, blending electro, minimal textures and experimental rhythms. Afrodeutsche and Eric Copeland bring a vivid, unconventional character before deeper selections from Specter, Dresvn and Setaoc Mass settle the mood into something atmospheric but still purposeful.
The closing stretch introduces harder shapes again, with raw techno from D.Dan and Kamikaze Space Programme, followed by Perc’s unmistakable industrial punch. Ejeca’s ‘Trance 1’ offers a sharp, energetic endpoint, finishing the episode with a final burst of momentum that ties both hours together through intensity and progression.
