This event took place at The Villa Project, 199C2 Nguyễn Văn Hưởng, Thảo Điền, Quận 2, Ho Chi Minh City, from 10 PM on 19 January 2024 until 6 AM on 20 January 2024. Scientific Sound Records and Scientific Sound Asia, in conjunction with The Villa Project, presented the official launch party for Scientific Sound Records with Italian DJ and producer Marco Mei at the centre of the night.
The event marked the public arrival of Scientific Sound Records after five years of artists appearing through Scientific Sound Asia's radio programming. Rather than creating a label disconnected from the station, the project developed from the DJs, producers and musical relationships already established through its radio station, live events and wider underground network.
The debut release came from Marco Mei, who returned to solo production after an absence of almost fourteen years. Old School Variety E.P. contained the tracks Buongiorno and Buonasera, connecting House Music and Tech House with the experienced club approach that has defined much of Marco's career.
Marco had already built a long relationship with Scientific Sound Asia through Bicycle Corporation and his own radio activity. His appearances through the Electronic Roots series also led to live events including Electronic Roots at Barcade Taiwan and a later Marco Mei Electronic Roots session in Hanoi.
Those connections made him a natural choice for the label's first release and launch event. Instead of beginning with an unknown relationship, Scientific Sound Records opened with an artist whose radio shows, productions and appearances were already closely tied to the platform.
Marco began DJing in 1991 during the early development of Italy's House and underground electronic scenes. Over more than three decades he went on to perform across Europe, Asia and other international territories while developing a broad musical range encompassing House, Deep House, Tech House, Disco and Techno.
His work in Asia became particularly important after he settled in Taipei, where he continued performing while maintaining international bookings. Scientific Sound Asia events such as Roots at Barcade Taiwan documented another side of that relationship through Disco, Afrobeat, Funk, Soul and House.
The Villa Project launch brought that history back to Ho Chi Minh City for a full eight-hour programme. Marco's midnight-to-2 AM headline set directly connected the DJ booth with the debut Scientific Sound Records release and gave the label launch a clear musical focal point.
DJ Psycho-UK opened the night from 10 PM until midnight with a Scientific Sound Asia set. His role connected the new record label with the organisation's earlier work as a promoter, DJ agency and underground electronic music platform in Vietnam.
Marco Mei followed from midnight until 2 AM, taking over at the point when the event moved fully into its headline section. The timing gave him two hours to represent both his wider DJ history and the House-focused direction surrounding Old School Variety E.P.
Slamer Lim played from 2 AM until 4 AM and carried the event into its later overnight phase. DJ Nikolaii then took control from 4 AM until the 6 AM finish, completing a line-up designed to keep the launch running continuously through the night.
The full programme therefore moved through four two-hour sets rather than relying on a short headline appearance surrounded by brief support slots. That structure gave each DJ room to establish a distinct part of the night while keeping Marco Mei and the new release at the centre of the event.
The launch also represented another stage in Scientific Sound Asia's development beyond broadcasting and promotion. Scientific Sound Records created a direct release platform for producers connected with the community that had formed through the station over its previous five years.
That progression linked the organisation's events, DJ agency, radio programming and music news with physical record releases. Instead of operating as separate projects, the different parts of Scientific Sound Asia could support the same artists through broadcasts, events, representation and label activity.
Entry for the launch was 140,000 VND, with the event running from Friday night through to Saturday morning in Thảo Điền. The Villa Project provided the setting for a launch built around House music, electronic music and the beginning of a new independent record label connected directly with the Scientific Sound Asia community.
The Scientific Sound Records launch party therefore marked more than another Marco Mei appearance in Ho Chi Minh City. With DJ Psycho-UK, Marco Mei, Slamer Lim and DJ Nikolaii playing across eight hours, the night formally connected five years of radio activity with a new label and Marco's first solo release in almost fourteen years.
