35 Years of Formation: Grooverider, DJ SS and MC Felon Live

This event took place at Tonic Rooftop Bar, 5th Floor, Vi House Building, 79 Quốc Hương Street, Thảo Điền, Quận 2, Ho Chi Minh City, from 9 PM on 25 January 2025 until 4 AM on 26 January 2025.

Scientific Sound Asia presented 35 Years of Formation Records with Grooverider, DJ SS and MC Felon. MC Felon was billed for the event but did not appear after missing his flight.

The event followed a long break in Scientific Sound Asia’s Ho Chi Minh City programme and brought a major Drum and Bass line-up to Tonic Rooftop Bar in Thảo Điền. It celebrated the history of Formation Records while connecting UK Jungle and Drum and Bass heritage with the local Vietnam scene.

Grooverider is widely recognised as one of the key figures in the development of Jungle and Drum and Bass. His work across pirate radio, club culture and the Rage nights at Heaven helped shape the early sound of the genre.

DJ SS is the founder of Formation Records and one of the original figures in UK Jungle and Drum and Bass. As a DJ, producer and label head, he helped push the sound forward through Formation’s releases and through tracks such as The Lighter.

MC Felon was originally billed as the host for the night. His appearance did not take place after travel issues prevented him from reaching Vietnam.

Support came from Chelsea Singh of MixSingh Records, Skitty, Throe, DJ Psycho-UK and Dobbo. The support line-up connected international guests with Vietnam-based Drum and Bass selectors and Scientific Sound Asia regulars.

The event was promoted as a celebration of Formation Records’ legacy and 35 years of music history. It brought together long-standing fans, local ravers and new listeners for a night focused on Jungle, Drum and Bass and bass music culture.
